Wypke Wypkema obtained
his M.B.Ch.B degree and did his housemanship in Pretoria at the University
Hospital.
He studied for seven years, specialising in general surgery in England at the Royal College of Surgeons, Guys and Hammersmith Hospitals in London and at the University of Bristol under the famous Professor Milnes Walker. He obtained his surgical qualification F.R.C.S. in London. Back in South Africa he settled in Johannesburg and was attached as a consultant to the Professorial Unit in Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained his doctorate in surgery (Ch.M. Wits). At present he is a general surgeon and founder of the Mayo Clinic of South Africa, which is situated in Roodepoort on the western border of Johannesburg. He specialises mainly in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery repairing hiatus herniae, inguinal herniae, appendix operations and removal of the gall bladder. He also sees patients with oesophageal (gullet) and swallowing problems. He has an interest in cosmetic surgery, especially with augmentation or reduction of the breast and 'tummy tucks'.
